Sensory Success for Summer Adventures

Summer brings new environments, sounds, and routines, which can be exciting, but also overwhelming for students with sensory sensitivities. This month, we’re focusing on how to support students in managing sensory input at school, at home, and in the community.

Recognize Triggers and Build Self-Awareness

Start by identifying common sensory triggers. These might include loud noises, bright lights, crowded spaces, or unexpected textures.

  • Use tools like the Emotions with Masks visuals (English | Español) to help students recognize and express how they’re feeling.

Support regulation with calming strategies and sensory tools. Noise-canceling headphones, weighted items, and fidget tools can help students stay grounded.

  • Use the SOLER Emotion Tools Chart (English | Español) to teach students how to choose strategies that work for them.

Prepare and Regulate with Sensory Supports

Proactively discuss and prepare students for sensory-rich events, such as fireworks, parties, and assemblies. These might include loud noises, bright lights, crowded spaces, or unexpected textures.

  • Try the Fireworks Straw Painting activity from Themes First! Art (English: Instructions and Step-by-Step Guide | Español: Instructions and Step-by-Step Guide) to explore sound and motion in a safe, creative way.
  • Offer Choice Wheels (English | Español) to give students control over their environment. Whether it’s choosing a calming activity, a preferred tool, or a quiet space, these visuals empower students to advocate for their needs.

By building awareness and offering proactive supports, we can help students navigate sensory challenges and enjoy all that summer has to offer.
